Powder Springs’ Independence Day Celebration Postponed

Return here for the latest on the city's Independence Day celebration plans.

Updated 9:55 a.m. Wednesday

Powder Springs officials in an emailed statement Wednesday morning announced the postponement of the city’s 18th-annual Independence Day Celebration, which had been set for Thursday, due to “the adverse weather conditions already occurring and forecasted.”

“It is unfortunate that the city will not have the opportunity to celebrate our country’s birthday and rich heritage on Independence Day this year,” Mayor Pat Vaughn said in the statement. “The number one responsibility of government is to assure the safety of its citizens; therefore, given the current and forecasted inclement weather conditions, we believe it is in everyone’s best interests to postpone the celebration until a later date.”

Vaughn added that the city plans on rescheduling the event and will inform the community once the date of it is set.

It’s looking like the flashes in the sky on the Fourth of July will be coming from the clouds instead of fireworks.

A forecast full of rain and possible thunderstorms looms for West Cobb. The chance of precipitation tonight stands at 50 percent, according to the National Weather Service, with the chance increasing to 100 percent for Wednesday and most of the day Thursday.

The rainy forecast led the weather service to issue Tuesday a flash flood watch that will be in effect Wednesday morning through Friday morning.

Powder Springs officials say they have not made a final call on whether to hold the city’s 18th-annual Independence Day Celebration on Thursday.

“We are in a ‘holding pattern’ as it relates to determining whether or not the Independence Day celebration will occur. The weather reports don’t look promising, but we are considering various factors before we make a final determination,” City Manager Brad Hulsey told West Cobb Patch Tuesday afternoon. “It’s a ‘Catch 22’ situation.”

As of early Tuesday evening, the National Weather Service forecast says rain is all but certain Wednesday, with thunderstorms possible throughout the day. Thursday’s expected weather calls for more of the same, though the chance of precipitation drops to 90 percent that evening.

Meteorologists say the chance of precipitation will drop to 70 percent Friday morning and 40 percent that evening, with the possibility of rain further diminishing Saturday, but thunderstorms are still possible Friday and Saturday—days that other cities have designated for their Independence Day celebrations. Nearby Paulding County, for instance, has events scheduled for each of those days.
