Marietta Teen Wins Scholarship for Community Project

Garland Jones created the "Back-N-Pack" project, which provides food for poor and distressed refugee families in Atlanta.

A Marietta teen who makes a positive impact in metro Atlanta through volunteerism has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program.

Garland Jones, 17, is the creator of the "Back-N-Pack" project, which provides food for poor and distressed refugee families in Atlanta. According to Kohl's, the Back-N-Pack project has collected more than 16,000 pounds of food and raised more than $4,500 for the cause.

That, Kohl's officials said this morning in a statement, is why Jones was named one of 200 regional winners. Regional winners are eligible for one of Kohl’s 10 national scholarships, which will be announced at the end of this month. National winners will each receive a total of $10,000 in scholarships. Additionally, Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on each national winner’s behalf.

Jones' efforts were highlighted in a July 2012 profile in the Marietta Daily Journal.
