Hillgrove Boys Survive Alexander Comeback

The Hawks hold on for a 3-point tournament win.

The Hillgrove Hawks saw a 10-point second-half lead dwindle to naught before a late surge gave them a 43-40 win over Alexander in their opening game of the Lake City Classic at Allatoona High School Tuesday. The Hawks led 34-24 with three minutes left in the third quarter, then saw that lead dissipate in a 12-2 Alexander run that knotted the game at 36-36 with five minutes left to play. "I thought we stopped boxing out, and we stopped defending," Hillgrove head coach Edward Morris said. "We're having spurts this year where we go through a three-minute stretch where we just don't do little things, and then a 10-point lead becomes a four-point lead. Hillgrove Opens Lake City Classic with Easy Win

The Lady Hawks stay unbeaten thanks to a 34-point victory over North Clayton.

Hillgrove's girls used an overpowering full-court press and a versatile offensive attack to knock off North Clayton 75-41 in the first game of the Lake City Classic at Allatoona High School Tuesday. The Hawks overcame the sluggishness of a 10 a.m. start time to extend their season-opening winning streak to eight games. The full-court press created havoc for North Clayton, which turned the ball over 37 times. "We know they're a great team and they shoot the ball well, so we wanted to extend our defense and really put pressure on their ball handlers," said Hillgrove head coach Sheryl Fowler. The Hawks got 15 points and six rebounds from senior forward Larryqua Hall, who signed with Virginia Tech in November. She used her athleticism to gain …
