Kiwi Quilts was off C.H. Parkway for three years before taking over the Country Store of Seven Springs former spot on Marietta Street.
Kiwi Quilts—which offers a wide variety of fabrics, tools, literature, classes and other things on quilting—is the latest business to move into what could be considered the most recognizable building in the city limits of Powder Springs. After being open on C.H. Parkway for three years, the business replaces the Country Store of Seven Springs, which closed its doors in July after 15 years at the location on Marietta Street in the heart of the city's downtown area. The rear section of the building, once a stable, dates back to the 1830s and is believed to be the oldest standing structure in the city. The front section can be traced back to the 1860s and has been, among other things, a blacksmith shop, general store and dance studio. In 2006…

Lysandra Taylor had operated her business, Darcy's Botanicals, from home for nearly four years before moving into the heart of the city.
All the hair and body products featured at Darcy's Botanicals—the conditioners, the perfumes, the body oils, the bath salts—are handmade by Lysandra Taylor. The Powder Springs resident of 17 years ran the business from her home for nearly four of those years before deciding she wanted a brick-and-mortar shop. Early last month, she held the grand opening for her new location on Marietta Street downtown in the former Powder Springs Coffee and Bake Shoppe spot. The store was previewed by Patch in May. Taylor, 42, named it after her 10-year-old daughter Darcy, a student at Kemp Elementary. Don’t miss any of the local news you care about. The owners of Lily Torte Baking Company will host a celebration on Saturday in recognition of their first year being open in downtown Powder Springs. “It’s been a challenge,” said Lindsey Hazard, who started the business last summer with her cousin, Erin-Renee Sierra. “They say the first year (for a new business) is the most challenging year, just like with a marriage. But we’re still open and we’re getting busier every day.” Scheduled for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the shop’s Marietta Street location across from City Hall, the celebration will feature free samples, raffle prizes and special deals. Hazard said that running a new business while she raises three children and Sierra raises two is no easy feat. It was also hard to overcome the loss…

The Country Store of Seven Springs, which will shut its doors at the end of July, is one in a line of businesses to call the building home since the mid-1800s.
When Gloria Hilderbran and Diane Reese bought a downtown Powder Springs building to house their antique business 15 years ago, their first task was removing old egg cartons nailed to the ceiling. A dance studio had once called the building home, and the cartons helped with acoustics. The business partners counted each one as they took them down—2,004 in all—and Hilderbran jokingly calls it their “first major task.” She laughs now at the tediousness of it, but “it wasn’t funny when we were trying to get all of those down.” Hilderbran isn’t sure what the last memory will be when the Country Store of Seven Springs closes its doors at the end of July, but she does know what memories she’ll miss most: the older members of the community coming …

Darcy's Botanicals has been online-only for nearly four years but will soon have a home in the heart of the city.
Lysandra Taylor had driven through downtown Powder Springs several times, keeping an eye out for a brick-and-mortar spot for her home-based online business. Then, she spotted Tea at Seven Springs and wanted to go in for some tea. But with the business—as well as its adjoining partner, the Powder Springs Coffee and Bake Shoppe—closing at the start of the year, Taylor noticed a “For Rent” sign and wanted to know more. After seeing the elaborate woodwork in the coffee shop completed by the owners of the building and businesses, Larry and Joan Evans, Taylor knew it was the perfect location for her beauty boutique, Darcy’s Botanicals. “We’re basically a home-based hair and body care business mainly for curly and natural hair—afro-texture hair, …

Rachel Summerlin brought her dream of owning a boutique to fruition on Marietta Street downtown in late April.
Rachel Summerlin’s dream officially came true on April 28—the day her business, Nova’s Boutique, opened. “This was a passion of mine for years,” she said of boutique-ing, something inspired by her mother and the business’s namesake, Nova Jackson, “and as a child, I always wanted to open a boutique.” So after her neck was injured while working at a corporate job, she pushed her dream to fruition. It took Summerlin and her husband about seven weeks to renovate the large vacant space next to Lily Torte Baking Company on Marietta Street in downtown Powder Springs. It had been without a business for several years and needed a lot of work, Summerlin said. Now, she’s happy that it’s up and going and serving customers, she added. Nova’s offers men…

Leesa Raaum, who told police in April that Powder Springs Mayor Pat Vaughn hit her with a door handle as she was shutting a door, made a recording of the incident and gave it to police. The two live in the Country Walk subdivision, which Vaughn oversees with her property management business, Neighborhood Management Services. The recording was made at Vaughn's business office on the Town Square. Raaum and Vaughn can be heard talking about a missing key in a discussion that gradually escalates. Near the end, Raaum said she'd like her husband present before talking further; Vaughn said, "Out you go, bye"; the door shuts; and Raaum says, "Oh my God." Vaughn was "exceptionally cleared" by Cobb County police after the investigation. In the …
