The Georgia Department of Labor announced Wednesday that some recipients of federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) in Georgia will lose extended unemployment benefits after Saturday, Jan. 12. EUC was established in 2008 to aid the long-term unemployed. Georgia will “trigger off” EUC’s Tier 4 unemployment insurance program during the week ending Jan. 12 because the state’s jobless rate has declined in the last three months, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Georgia’s jobless rate was 9 percent in September, but declined to 8.7 percent in October and 8.5 percent in November. The Georgia Department of Labor this week will mail notices with instructions on how individuals can file for Emergency Unemployment Compensation. "Federal law mandates that a state in which EUC is provided must have a three-month seasonally adjusted unemployment average of 9.0 percent to qualify for the EUC Tier 4 program," the department said in a news release. "This program allows extended benefits for individuals who have exhausted first, second, and third tiers of EUC and have no potential eligibility for regular unemployment insurance benefits." Temporary layoffs in manufacturing are blamed for the upticks.
The jobless rate in Georgia has jumped 3 tenths of a percentage point to 9.3 percent from June to July, according to the Georgia Department of Labor. The culprit: a large number of temporary manufacturing sector layoffs, State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said in a news release. But many of those workers have already returned to work, he added. First-time claims for unemployment insurance jumped by more than 15 percent from June, but are still 8.2 percent below the number of claims from this time last year. In Cobb County, there was a 4.5 percent increase in first-time unemployment claims. There were 2,515 first-time claims in July, up from 2,406 in June. This number is still below the 2,816 first-time claims in July 2011. Additionally, …
