The Lady Indians finish the year 33-0 by beating Hillgrove for the fourth time.
McEachern defeated Hillgrove, 69-36, in a battle of Powder Springs schools to win the Georgia High School Association AAAAA girls basketball state championship Friday at the Gwinnett Arena. The Lady Indians finished the season 33-0 and are ranked second in the nation by ESPN and third by USA Today. It was the culmination of a dream for seniors Pachiyaanna Roberts, Dominique Wilson and Kayla Montgomery, who had played together since middle school, The Marietta Daily Journal reported. It was also the final high school game for senior Destinie Gibbs, a transfer from Southwest DeKalb. Hillgrove finished 26-5 and also had a great season. The Lady Indians take the battle for Powder Springs and the AAAAA Georgia championship over Hillgrove, 69-36.
The McEachern Lady Indians are the undefeated AAAAA Georgia state champions, ending the year 33-0 with a 69-36 win over crosstown rival Hillgrove at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. McEachern scored the first 13 points of the game, held a 19-point lead at the half, then watched Hillgrove claw back into it with tenacious defense to cut the lead to 12 after three quarters, 43-31. But unlike Thursday's semifinal win over Norcross, when the Indians let most of a double-digit lead slip away, McEachern looked like one of the top two or three teams in the nation in the fourth quarter tonight. The Indians outscored the Hawks 26-5 in the final quarter, allowing Coach Phyllis Arthur to clear the bench in the final minutes. It's the first GHSA title for…

One of the two surviving teams from Region 4-AAAAA made the Georgia High School Association state AAAAA Final Four, but it wasn't the region champion ranked second in Georgia. Harrison, which tied for first in Region 4-AAAAA during the regular season but finished third in the region tournament, grabbed a spot in the Final Four, while North Cobb fell one game short. In a battle of teams unranked in the PrepCountry/Georgia Athletic Coaches Association AAAAA top 10, Harrison jumped out to a 21-5 lead after the first quarter in Fort Valley and rolled into the Final Four. Ryan Blumenthal led the Hoyas with 27 points, The Marietta Daily Journal and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Also in double figures were Jay Bowyer with 13, …

McEachern and Hillgrove did what they were expected to do Saturday in the Georgia High School Association girls basketball tournament, pounding fellow Region 4-AAAAA schools North Cobb and Harrison to reach the AAAAA Final Four. McEachern beat fellow Region 4-AAAAA school Harrison for the fourth time this season to raise its record to 31-0, while the Lady Hoyas ended the year 16-15. After beating Harrison by 57 points two weeks ago and coming off a 43-point win and 61-point first half against Westlake, the top-ranked Lady Indians had a sluggish start in Fort Valley and led only 29-14 at halftime, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. McEachern got rolling in the second half and led by as many as 40 points, the AJC said. Patches …

This year’s Georgia High School Association AAAAA girls basketball tournament started out just like last year’s—with Region 4-AAAAA dominating. Last year all four 4-AAAAA entrants—McEachern, North Cobb, Hillgrove and Campbell—made the quarterfinals, and the only teams that beat 4-AAAAA teams were other teams from the region and state champion Norcross. Friday night, all four 4-AAAAA teams—McEachern, Hillgrove, North Cobb and Harrison—won their first-round games against Region 3-AAAAA teams, and they’re a Tuesday-night sweep away from matching 2011’s quarterfinal quartet. Top-ranked, undefeated McEachern had no trouble at home against Camden County, winning 88-40. And the Lady Indians didn’t appear satisfied. “Now how u love this. McEachern…

Fans of all three public high schools in Powder Springs and Lithia Springs have something to root for during the Georgia High School Association state basketball playoffs. The McEachern girls could be the story of the year, carrying an undefeated record, the Region 4-AAAAA title, the state’s No. 1 ranking and USA Today’s national No. 3 ranking into the AAAAA tournament. The Lady Indians, last year's AAAAA runner-up, open play at home Friday against Camden County, the fourth seed from Region 3-AAAAA. If they win, they’ll host Westlake or Colquitt County next Tuesday. The quarterfinals are at Fort Valley State on March 3, and the Final Four is at the Arena at Gwinnett Center on March 8 and 9. Crosstown rival Hillgrove also hopes to make it …
