Harrison and Hillgrove Make America's Most Challenging High Schools List

Nine other Cobb schools made the list.

Hillgrove and Harrison High schools are two of 11 Cobb County schools included in The Washington Post's list of America’s Most Challenging High Schools. Harrison is No. 35 and Hillgrove is No. 95 in the state, according to The Post. Walton High School had the highest ranking of any Cobb County school, coming in at No. 3 on the state list and No. 163 on the national list. The Post's ranking system calculates the number of advanced placement, international baccalaureate and advanced international certificate of education tests given at a school each year, and divides it by the number of seniors who graduated that year. A ratio of 1.000 means the school had as many tests as graduates. Other Cobb high schools that made the list include: For …

McEachern, Hillgrove Headed to Football Playoffs

The top-seeded Indians will host Colquitt County, while Hillgrove will travel to South Georgia to face Camden County.

After a tight, eventful game against one another to wrap up the regular season Friday, McEachern and Hillgrove will begin their playoff journeys this week. The top-seeded Indians (8-2 and 8-0 in Region 4-6A) will host Colquitt County on Friday at 7:30 p.m. All first-round playoff tickets are $10. The Packers (7-3) average 27.9 on offense this season, and their defense has held opponents to 16.5, according to Scout.com. Meanwhile, those numbers are 37.9 and 23.5, respectively, for McEachern, the website says. Scout.com reports a 1-1 record for both teams in the series, comprised of a 28-7 win for Colquitt in 1996, and a 35-7 McEachern victory in the 1998 semifinals. Hillgrove, McEachern Set for Battle

Since the Powder Springs teams began playing each other in 2010, both have took one win and one loss, making tonight's matchup a tiebreaker in the rivalry.

It seems clear which team has the advantage going into tonight's battle for the Powder Town crown between the city's two high schools. McEachern is a perfect 7-0 in Region 4-6A play, securing their region win. The Indians' only two losses came early in the season to Gwinnett County's Grayson and East Cobb's Walton, last year's 5A state champion and runner-up, respectively. They'll also have home-field advantage. Since last year's game was at McEachern, Hillgrove was to host this year, but construction on the Hawks' new visitor stands hasn't wrapped up yet. The crowd from 2011 packed McEachern's Cantrell Stadium, the biggest of Cobb high schools, to the brim and more, so ample seating will be surely be necessary. Hillgrove won that nail-…

Kenyan Drake Up To 5 TDs for Crimson TIde

The former Hillgrove High standout is tied for third most among backs and receivers on Alabama's squad.

Kenyan Drake ran for another touchdown Saturday in the Crimson Tide's 38-7 win over Mississippi State, marking the fifth time he's been in the endzone as a freshman. Among backs and receivers, that total is tied with freshman receiver Amari Cooper and behind only the seven each from fellow running backs Eddie Lacy, a junior, and T.J. Yeldon, a freshman.  Drake has done it on 29 carries for 206 yards, an average of 7.1 a carry. His longest of the five touchdowns was from 32 yards out. Alabama (8-0, 5-0 in SEC) remains at No. 1 in the AP Top 25, in front of No. 2 Oregon and No. 3 Kansas State. The Crimson Tide will head to Baton Rouge this weekend to face LSU. School Board Member, State Rep. Clash Over Charter Amendment

Alison Bartlett, along with a member of Georgia's PTA, debated Tuesday with Ed Setzler over issues of school choice, regulation, accountability, funding and more.

State Rep. Ed Setzler’s main argument Tuesday night in favor of the proposed charter school amendment was choice—allowing parents to pull their children out of failing traditional public schools to attend charter ones. “Southwest Atlanta, rural Georgia—is there any school in the state that you wouldn’t want to send your kid to?” he asked the dozen-plus forum attendees at Hillgrove High School. “If there is any school you wouldn’t want to send your kid to, you’ve got to support choice.” But the forum’s other two panelist—West Cobb school board member Alison Bartlett and Karen Hallacy, the legislative chair of Georgia’s PTA—voiced their unyielding opposition to the amendment, with Bartlett calling charter school agencies “for-profit groups …

Is it any wonder that Setzler would cite Florida-based Charter School USA... As reported today in the AJC concerning the charter school Amendment 1 to the Georgia Constitution: "Charter Schools USA of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., a major charter school management company that pushed for a charter school in Cherokee County, gave $50,000 to the main group working to pass the amendment."   more ›
