School Board Member, State Rep. Clash Over Charter Amendment

Alison Bartlett, along with a member of Georgia's PTA, debated Tuesday with Ed Setzler over issues of school choice, regulation, accountability, funding and more.

State Rep. Ed Setzler’s main argument Tuesday night in favor of the proposed charter school amendment was choice—allowing parents to pull their children out of failing traditional public schools to attend charter ones. “Southwest Atlanta, rural Georgia—is there any school in the state that you wouldn’t want to send your kid to?” he asked the dozen-plus forum attendees at Hillgrove High School. “If there is any school you wouldn’t want to send your kid to, you’ve got to support choice.” But the forum’s other two panelist—West Cobb school board member Alison Bartlett and Karen Hallacy, the legislative chair of Georgia’s PTA—voiced their unyielding opposition to the amendment, with Bartlett calling charter school agencies “for-profit groups …

Is it any wonder that Setzler would cite Florida-based Charter School USA... As reported today in the AJC concerning the charter school Amendment 1 to the Georgia Constitution: "Charter Schools USA of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., a major charter school management company that pushed for a charter school in Cherokee County, gave $50,000 to the main group working to pass the amendment."   more ›

Hillgrove Has Cobb's Biggest SAT Jump

But the average for all the county's public high schools shows a two-point drop from last year.

Seven of the 16 high schools in the Cobb County School District posted SAT scores from the class of 2012 above the national average. But the system-wide cumulative average is down slightly from last year, according to data released Monday.  Recent graduates averaged an SAT score of 1520 in the combined reading, math and writing totals, a drop from the 1522 score the year before, the CCSD said in a release (see attached PDF).  But that 1520 score remains 68 points ahead of the Georgia average and 22 points ahead of the national average.  A total of 5,790 CCSD seniors took the SAT this year, representing around 80 percent of their class.  On the rise were SAT scores for African-American students (14 points to a 1336 score), Native-American …

Hillgrove Bus Driver Becomes Ill, Follows Protocol

At no time were students in any danger when the vehicle pulled over to the side of the road Tuesday morning.

By Robert Shaw Hillgrove High Principal  Dear Hillgrove Community: The purpose of this email is to make you aware of an issue that occurred on a Hillgrove bus Tuesday morning. As sometimes happens in our world of instant communication, there are many incorrect rumors circulating, so I wanted to provide you with factual information. While on her morning Hillgrove bus run, the driver of Bus 1466 became ill.  Following emergency protocol, she pulled the bus over to the side of the road. Using her bus radio, she attempted to contact her dispatcher and explain what was happening and provide her location. Due to her illness, she was having a hard time explaining her circumstances to the bus dispatcher.  A Hillgrove student came to the front of …

McEachern Edges Pebblebrook; Marietta Pommels Hillgrove

Following Friday's games, both Powder Springs high schools move to 1-2 on the season.

The McEachern Indians grabbed their first victory Friday with a one-touchdown defeat of a team they trounced last year, 52-14. McEachern (1-2) traveled to Mableton and picked up the 30-23 win over Region 4-6A rival Pebblebrook (0-3). Helping the Indians' cause was Mike Sherman, who rushed for 112 yards, and Ty Clemons, who threw two touchdown passes, according to the Marietta Daily Journal. “Both teams kept fighting tonight, and we’ll get better as the season goes along,” McEachern coach Kyle Hockman told the newspaper. “I’m happy with the poise that our offense, especially our quarterback, showed in the second half, and a win against an excellent team like Pebblebrook is a good way to start the regional part of our schedule.” Meanwhile, …

Kenyan Drake Scores Second Alabama Touchdown

During Saturday's victory over Arkansas, the former Hillgrove standout also led the Crimson Tide in rushing.

Kenyan Drake gave Alabama his second six on a 12-yard run during Saturday's 52-0 blowout over Arkansas. And even though he had fewer rushing attempts than a couple of his teammates, he rushed for the most Crimson Tide yards. The victory pushes Alabama to 3-0 and No. 1 in both the AP Top 25 and USA Today Poll.  In his first college season after a career of racking up stats and winning awards at Hillgrove, Drake is in a field of five running backs in the Crimson Tide's arsenal. Junior Eddie Lacy ran for 55 yards on 12 attemps, making it into the endzone three times against the Razorbacks, according to the box score. Freshman T.J. Yeldon had one touchdown and 55 yards on 13 attempts. Meanwhile, on just six carries, Drake racked up 57 yards (…
