Hillgrove High School's Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps unit raised funds for the program at the Chick-fil-A on Dallas Highway on Saturday. Tammy O'Banion, president of the Cadet Parent Organization, said it's important for the cadets to get involved in the community and make their presence known. After finishing first in a qualifying event during the weekend of April 16-17, the rookie team from Hillgrove High School’s NJROTC program is getting a shot at the gold. The finish from Cadets Hunter Guthrie, Austin Horan, Miguel Maldonado, Houtan Satarian and Jacob Yingling in the Brain Brawl Wildcard in Jacksonville, FL resulted in their ticket to the big time. The Area 12 Brain Brawl Championship, a trivia competition among NJROTC programs, will be at Henry County High School in McDonough, GA on Saturday. Area 12 covers Georgia and Florida. “It’s like a college bowl,” explained their instructor, Capt. Charles Mingonet. “It’s beat the buzzer.” Guthrie said the questions cover the gamut, from “naval science to current events and ROTC …

After training less than a year, the cadets shine in competition.
At first glance, they look like most kids at any Georgia high school—but they stand a little straighter, their hair is tidier, their clothes are neater, and they snap to attention when roll is called. They're members of the new junior ROTC program at Hillgrove High School, and most of them plan to continue in the military once they graduate. Captain Charles Mingonet, who leads the class, said the program started last year, but the 81 cadets in it have already distinguished themselves at the Area 12 Drill Competition in the fall. The competition included armed drills, marching aspects, scholastic challenges and athletic testing. Chief Alan Harris, who is also an instructor for the unit, explained: "This competition at Louella High School in…
