Ojuolape Buzzer-Beater Defeats Sprayberry

Lithia Springs stayed perfect in region play thanks to the backup guard's heroics.

Femi Ojuolape drained a three-pointer at the buzzer to snap a 55-55 tie and send Lithia Springs to its seventh straight Region 5-AAAA victory with a 58-55 win over Sprayberry Tuesday. With two seconds left in the game, the Lions had the ball at the far baseline. They threw it near mid-court, where center Bobby Brown found Ojuolape on the left wing. He got a clean look at the shot and nailed it just as the buzzer sounded. “We wanted to get the ball to our big man in the middle of the court, and we had one shooter running up one side and the other shooter running up the other side,” explained head coach Jason Slate. “And we said whichever one’s open try to get it him. And he did a good job of seeing which one was open, and Femi did a good …

Lions Take A Split Against Alexander

The Lithia Springs boys team extend its lead in region 5-AAAA with a victory, while the Lady Lions lost by double digits.

Lithia Springs split its two varsity games Friday at home against Alexander High School. The boys (6-0 in region, 10-5 overall) strengthened their grip on the top spot of region 5-AAAA with a win over the second-place Cougars, 57-42. But the Lady Lions' fate was quite different Friday. They dropped to 3-13 on the season and 1-5 in the region after their 48-33 loss to Alexander. The Lions set the tone early in the boys varsity match up. Only three minutes in, head coach Jason Slate sent a message to his own team by substituting all five of his starters when they didn’t show the kind of intensity he wanted. “Our starters, for some reason, had gotten complacent,” he said. “They weren’t playing with the fire that we expect. As soon as we …

Slate Frustrated with Lithia Springs Loss to Allatoona

The coach calls out his players after a double-digit defeat.

Lithia Springs led 2-0 in their Lake City Classic semifinal game against host Allatoona on Wednesday. The Lions never led again. Poor offensive execution and a parade of missed shots on the interior led to an ever-growing deficit that maxed out at 18 points with five minutes left in the game and ended in a 69-56 loss. The team's showing led an admittedly frustrated head coach Jason Slate to offer some choice words to his team. "We don't play hard like past Lithia Springs teams do. We have a bunch of cool cats that are living off of what the teams of the last 10 years have done. They haven't done nothing to earn anybody's respect," Slate said. "They haven't done anything to be able to walk with a swagger like Lithia Springs teams do because…

Lithia Springs Downs Johnson County

The boys grab a win in the first round of the Lake City Classic on Tuesday.

The Lithia Springs boys basketball team enjoyed an easy first-round game at the Lake City Classic basketball tournament at Allatoona High School on Tuesday, using an edge in athleticism and an uptempo rhythm to beat Johnson County, 76-41. Head coach Jason Slate had his team pumped entering the game, and from the opening whistle Lithia Springs did what it is known best for–running the floor and putting intense pressure on opponents. An early 3-0 deficit was erased as guard Jabari Evans scored eight first-quarter points to lead the Lions to a 26-8 first-quarter mauling. Evans finished the half with 14 points and ended the game with that total, enough to lead all Lithia Springs scorers. Junior forward Bobby Brown was the only other Lion in …
