Chatt Tech to Recruit for Technology Training Programs

Classes include heating and air conditioning, building and facilities maintenance, industrial electrical technology, electrical and computer engineering, welding and joining technology, and horticulture.

The Georgia Department of Labor’s Cobb-Cherokee Career Center will help Chattahoochee Technical College recruit unemployed workers and other students to enroll in short-term training classes for a variety of “in-demand” jobs in the technology field. The training program is entitled Jump Start Your Career in the Technology Industry.  The recruitment for the program will be held Thursday, Nov. 15, from 10 a.m. to noon at the career center, located at 465 Big Shanty Rd. in Marietta. The classes will be taught during the 2013 Spring Semester, beginning January 12. Representatives of the college, including training instructors, admissions officers and financial aid personnel will be on hand to provide information about the training programs.   …

Home Depot to Recruit Workers

The company will be recruiting for bi-lingual supervisors who are fluent in both Spanish and English.

The Georgia Department of Labor will help Home Depot fill a number of jobs. The recruitment for Home Depot is set for Thursday, Nov. 15, from 10 a.m. to noon at the GDOL’s Cobb-Cherokee Career Center. The company will be recruiting for bi-lingual supervisors who are fluent in both Spanish and English. Applicants must have a high school diploma or a General Education Diploma (GED) and have at least one year of supervisory experience. Applicants will be required to apply on-line at the recruitment unless they have already applied at http://careers.homedepot.com/?HDCAREERS&view. Salaries are in the $12 an hour range, depending on experience.

Cobb Libraries Offering Free Online Courses

Available are hundreds of instructor-led classes covering health and wellness, creative writing, computer programming, GED test preparation and more.

Cobb County Public Library System cardholders can now access ed2go, a program providing instructor-led online courses through the system's website. The ed2go program offers you access to hundreds of instructor-led online courses covering everything from health and wellness, creative writing, computer programming, GED test preparation and more. ed2go courses are developed by expert instructors—some of which currently work at universities—and have continuous enrollment dates. Each individual course is offered online for six weeks and features 12 lessons with online discussions, homework, quizzes and a final exam. Career Expo Thursday for Veterans, Other Job Seekers

A few dozen employers from around metro Atlanta will be participating in the event, put on by the Georgia Department of Labor and Chattahoochee Technical College.

The Georgia Department of Labor’s Cartersville Career Center will assist Chattahoochee Technical College with a career expo for veterans and other job seekers on Thursday. The expo will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in building 400 on Chattahoochee Tech’s North Metro Campus at 5198 Ross Road in Acworth. The expo will feature a number of employers, educational institutions and resource agencies that provide assistance to job seekers. The employers will be hiring or discussing current and future employment opportunities, while other organizations will provide educational and other resources. Two separate events, hosted by the Georgia Department of Labor, will fill a number of jobs for the companies.

The Georgia Department of Labor will conduct two separate recruitments next week to help a McDonald’s restaurant and Blue Stream Professional Services fill a number of jobs in Cobb County. The first event will be held Thursday, Oct. 25 from 8-11 a.m. at the McDonald’s restaurant at 4050 Jiles Road in Kennesaw. The restaurant will be hiring workers to operate grills, take orders from customers, operate cash registers, prepare menu items, stock supplies, perform cleaning and janitorial services, and provide building maintenance. Georgia's Unemployed Could Get More Assistance

The state Department of Labor will mail notices this week with instructions on how individuals can file for additional help.

With the state unemployment rate at 9.2 percent, some long-term unemployed workers may be eligible for additional benefits. The Georgia Department of Labor this week will mail notices with instructions on how individuals can file for Emergency Unemployment Compensation. "Federal law mandates that a state in which EUC is provided must have a three-month seasonally adjusted unemployment average of 9.0 percent to qualify for the EUC Tier 4 program," the department said in a news release. "This program allows extended benefits for individuals who have exhausted first, second, and third tiers of EUC and have no potential eligibility for regular unemployment insurance benefits." Cobb Company to Add 600 Jobs

Cobb's Jobless Rate Drops

That mirrors declines across metro Atlanta.

The August jobs report is out, and preliminary figures from the Georgia Department of Labor show a dip in Cobb's jobless rate. The rate went from a revised 8.5 percent in July to 8.1 percent in August. And thanks to fewer layoffs in manufacturing, construction, administrative and support services, educational services, and health care and social assistance, the 28-county metro Atlanta area's jobless rate fell from a revised 9.2 percent in July to 8.9 percent in August, the Georgia Department of Labor said in a news release. Of the 10 counties within the Atlanta Regional Commission, Cobb ranks fourth, behind Cherokee (7.1 percent), Fayette (7.8 percent) and Gwinnett (7.9 percent). The Cobb Galleria Centre is set to host a career expo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday. The expo will feature about 30 employers, educational institutions and resource agencies that provide assistance to job seekers.
