Shred Documents, Donate Shoes in Cobb Next Week

Keep Marietta Beautiful and Keep Cobb Beautiful will host document-shredding events at the front lot of Marietta Power and Water and Piedmont Church, respectively, on Saturday, March 16.

If you have confidential or sensitive documents that need to be safely discarded, Keep Marietta Beautiful and Keep Cobb Beautiful are hosting free document-shredding events. In addition, if you have gently-worn shoes, you can donate them. Rubber band the pairs of shoes to keep them together. Get Rid of Unwanted Medicine for Free

Items accepted at Saturday's collection event include liquid and pill medications, sharps and needles, diabetes materials, catheters and tubing.

Medicine cabinet overflowing with bottles used for a two-day ailment and never again? Need to clear up some room in preparation for sniffle season? Here's your chance to do so safely and responsibly. Keep Cobb Beautiful and Kaiser Permanente are set to host Medication Disposal Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at Cobb Police Precinct 1 at 2380 Cobb Parkway NW, Kennesaw.  "The largest source of pharmaceutical byproducts in our drinking water comes from the improper disposal of unused medications flushed down the drain," a news release says. Free Document Shredding Day Is Saturday

Residents needing to dispose of papers can visit one of three locations.

Keep Cobb Beautiful, Keep Smyrna Beautiful and Keep Marietta Beautiful are joining forces to allow Cobb residents to dispose of unwanted documents by shredding them on Saturday. From 9 a.m. to noon, there will be three locations at which residents may have their documents shredded for free. Residents may bring up to 100 pounds of paper to be shredded. Keep Cobb Beautiful Needs Roadway Volunteers

Landscapers and other groups may volunteer to adopt a gateway or right of way and keep the greenery clean and maintained.

Due to budget cuts in the last two years, the efforts of the Cobb County Department of Transportation (DOT) have been restricted to maintaining the safety of roadways in the county, while the surrounding greenery has been left to suffer. Keep Cobb Beautiful is looking for volunteer organizations that would be willing to adopt gateways and right of ways in the county for the purposes of cleaning and improving the green space around the roads. As part of the Adopt-A-Gateway Program, landscapers and other volunteer groups would be given one of 11 gateways to Cobb County to showcase their talents and expertise and will improve the scenery of these important entrances to the county. Because of budget cuts, Cobb County service agencies need donations. Here is a list of the agencies and how you can help. The links take you to the donation sites. Animal Shelter—You can help make a difference in the lives of animals housed at Cobb County Animal Control. Money received will be used to help pay for the care of animals. There are volunteering opportunities, too. K-9 Donations—The K-9 unit is a vital part of police department’s efforts to protect Cobb County. Police canines perform a broad range of essential functions, including patrol activities, narcotic detection and bomb detection. The police department is accepting donations to aid in the operation of the K-9 unit. Funds will go directly to help replace retired canines …

Comment Today on Cobb's Job Hunt

The Board of Commissioners is considering revisions to the ordinance meant to lure businesses to the county.

Cobb County residents have their last scheduled chance this morning to comment on proposed changes to incentives to lure jobs to the county. The second of two public hearings on changes to the economic development ordinance is the highlight of the agenda for the county Board of Commissioners’ regular meeting at 9 a.m. in the boardroom at 100 Cherokee St. off Marietta Square. The changes would allow the Office of Economic Development to make decisions on a case-by-case basis whether to offer tax breaks or other incentives to companies to move to or expand in Cobb and bring in jobs. A key change would eliminate a requirement that a company add at least 25 jobs and have at least a $500,000 economic impact to be eligible for incentives. …
