Future college stars dazzled in this three-day, 16-team tournament in Acworth.
The Lake City Classic Basketball Tournament ended Thursday after three days of hard-fought action by eight girls, and eight boys teams from around the southeast. The Hillgrove Lady Hawks, from Powder Springs, won the girls title with an 83-44 win over the Allatoona Lady Buccaneers, who hosted the tournament in Acworth. On the boys side, the host Allatoona Buccaneers beat the North Clayton Eagles 55-51. At the end of each championship game, tournament officials announced an All-Tournament team and a tournament Most Valuable Player. Larryqua Hall scored 19 points and took home Tournament MVP honors.
The Hillgrove girls basketball team jumped out on a 7-0 run to start the championship game at the Lake City Classic at Allatoona High School on Thursday. After giving up two free throws they scored the next eight points and never looked back, beating Allatoona 83-44. The flurry of scoring happened quickly as Hillgrove outscored Allatoona 23-4 in the first quarter, led by senior guard Larryqua Hall and her six first-quarter points. But it was also a balanced attack. Eight players scored in the opening quarter, including 6-foot-1 inch freshman Mackenzie Engram, who added four points and a height advantage that haunted Allatoona. "This is the first year we've had a little height," said Hillgrove head coach Sheryl Fowler. "But it's nice. We've…

Uptempo basketball action was just fine for Hillgrove, after they got aggressive.
The Hillgrove boys basketball team knew exactly what they were getting into when they saw Lithia Springs on the docket for Thursday's Day 3 game at the Lake City Classic at Allatoona High School. Lithia Springs likes to run and pressure for the entire game, making it easier for them to control every aspect of play. But it was Hillgrove that set the tone, winning 59-45. Hillgrove had a tough time in transition to start the game. Lithia Springs' full-court press was befuddling, to say the least. On three consecutive possessions, Hillgrove turned the ball over and started the game in a hole. After only scoring nine points in the first quarter, Hillgrove opened up for 17 in the second quarter and took a 26-22 lead into halftime as they began …

The coach calls out his players after a double-digit defeat.
Lithia Springs led 2-0 in their Lake City Classic semifinal game against host Allatoona on Wednesday. The Lions never led again. Poor offensive execution and a parade of missed shots on the interior led to an ever-growing deficit that maxed out at 18 points with five minutes left in the game and ended in a 69-56 loss. The team's showing led an admittedly frustrated head coach Jason Slate to offer some choice words to his team. "We don't play hard like past Lithia Springs teams do. We have a bunch of cool cats that are living off of what the teams of the last 10 years have done. They haven't done nothing to earn anybody's respect," Slate said. "They haven't done anything to be able to walk with a swagger like Lithia Springs teams do because…

The victory puts the Hawks in the finals of the Lake City Classic at Allatoona High School.
Through two games in the Lake City Classic at Allatoona High School, the Hillgrove Hawks' biggest challenges have been getting everyone on the team equal time on the floor and not getting bored with their lack of competition. The Hawks' romp through the holiday tournament continued Wednesday when they trounced Chestatee 64-39. At halftime the unbeaten Hawks were up by 23 points. Two minutes into the third quarter the lead was 30 points. That's when Hillgrove head coach Sheryl Fowler began focusing on the finer points of her team's progress. "We give our second group as much playing time as we can, and then we want to make sure we do the little things like boxing out, those kinds of things, and don't get sloppy," she said of her big-lead …

Full-court pressure causes a second-half swoon and keeps Hillgrove from the Lake City Classic boys championship game.
North Clayton junior Marcus Hunt scored 17 of his game-high 25 points in the second half as Hillgrove coughed up an 11-point third-quarter lead and lost 60-52. Hunt was the main beneficiary of a frenzied full-court press that sparked a 26-7 North Clayton run and eliminated the Hawks' hopes of winning the Lake City Classic championship at Allatoona High School. The run was aided by what Hillgrove head coach Edward Morris perceived as a lack of consistency from the game's referees. "I'm not going to blame the officials, but in the first half they called everything when they put their hands on us," he said. "We didn't get any of those calls in the second half. We just have to learn to play through that, and we didn't do that. We turned the …

The Hawks hold on for a 3-point tournament win.
The Hillgrove Hawks saw a 10-point second-half lead dwindle to naught before a late surge gave them a 43-40 win over Alexander in their opening game of the Lake City Classic at Allatoona High School Tuesday. The Hawks led 34-24 with three minutes left in the third quarter, then saw that lead dissipate in a 12-2 Alexander run that knotted the game at 36-36 with five minutes left to play. "I thought we stopped boxing out, and we stopped defending," Hillgrove head coach Edward Morris said. "We're having spurts this year where we go through a three-minute stretch where we just don't do little things, and then a 10-point lead becomes a four-point lead. If we do those little things, it might be a different game." Hillgrove led 42-40 with 10.6 …

The Lady Hawks stay unbeaten thanks to a 34-point victory over North Clayton.
Hillgrove's girls used an overpowering full-court press and a versatile offensive attack to knock off North Clayton 75-41 in the first game of the Lake City Classic at Allatoona High School Tuesday. The Hawks overcame the sluggishness of a 10 a.m. start time to extend their season-opening winning streak to eight games. The full-court press created havoc for North Clayton, which turned the ball over 37 times. "We know they're a great team and they shoot the ball well, so we wanted to extend our defense and really put pressure on their ball handlers," said Hillgrove head coach Sheryl Fowler. The Hawks got 15 points and six rebounds from senior forward Larryqua Hall, who signed with Virginia Tech in November. She used her athleticism to gain …
