After a tight, eventful game against one another to wrap up the regular season Friday, McEachern and Hillgrove will begin their playoff journeys this week. The top-seeded Indians (8-2 and 8-0 in Region 4-6A) will host Colquitt County on Friday at 7:30 p.m. All first-round playoff tickets are $10. The Packers (7-3) average 27.9 on offense this season, and their defense has held opponents to 16.5, according to Scout.com. Meanwhile, those numbers are 37.9 and 23.5, respectively, for McEachern, the website says. Since the Powder Springs teams began playing each other in 2010, both have took one win and one loss, making tonight's matchup a tiebreaker in the rivalry.
It seems clear which team has the advantage going into tonight's battle for the Powder Town crown between the city's two high schools. McEachern is a perfect 7-0 in Region 4-6A play, securing their region win. The Indians' only two losses came early in the season to Gwinnett County's Grayson and East Cobb's Walton, last year's 5A state champion and runner-up, respectively. They'll also have home-field advantage. Since last year's game was at McEachern, Hillgrove was to host this year, but construction on the Hawks' new visitor stands hasn't wrapped up yet. My Fox Atlanta's Paul Milliken is set to visit McEachern High this morning for a live broadcast during the channel's Good Day Atlanta program. Students are asked to wear McEachern attire and go to the school's Lovinggood Arena between 7:30 and 8 a.m. Those who arrive after must go to their first block classes. The live feeds will come at 8:15, 8:45 and 9:15 a.m. Students will return to class afterwards. The Indians (5-2) will take on North Cobb at home Friday. The McEachern Indians grabbed their first victory Friday with a one-touchdown defeat of a team they trounced last year, 52-14. McEachern (1-2) traveled to Mableton and picked up the 30-23 win over Region 4-6A rival Pebblebrook (0-3). Helping the Indians' cause was Mike Sherman, who rushed for 112 yards, and Ty Clemons, who threw two touchdown passes, according to the Marietta Daily Journal. “Both teams kept fighting tonight, and we’ll get better as the season goes along,” McEachern coach Kyle Hockman told the newspaper. “I’m happy with the poise that our offense, especially our quarterback, showed in the second half, and a win against an excellent team like Pebblebrook is a good way to start the regional part of our schedule.” Meanwhile, …

Two games in, Hillgrove and McEachern have racked up as many losses as all last season. But tonight's opponents might open the doors for them to return to their winning ways.
Both having last Friday off, the two teams have had plenty of time to clear their heads. McEachern (0-2) has been reflecting on a tough early season, which includes a 31-12 loss to defending state champ Grayson from Gwinnett County, and a last-minute, 37-35 defeat from Walton, a state runner-up last year and ranked No. 3 this year. As freshmen, last year's Hillgrove and McEachern standouts didn't get much playtime in college football's week one but likely will as they continue to develop. Here's an update on some of them, and if you've heard about any other players, let us know.
(LB, Hillgrove): Chubb is redshirted this season for the Wake Forest Deacon Demons, who won their first game against Liberty 20-17. They’ll next face North Carolina at home on Saturday. While at Hillgrove, Chubb was first team All-Region 5-5A, first team All-Cobb County, and played in the All-Star Senior Bowl, helping the Nationals win 41-19. His dad, Aaron, played linebacker for Georgia from 1985-88 and was picked in the 12th round by the Patriots in 1989. The Powder Springs football programs have faced three top-five teams in four games and look to begin working toward last year's winning ways.
Two games into the 2012 season, the Hillgrove and McEachern football teams have accumulated as many defeats as they combined for all last season. The Indians and Hawks were each handed second-round playoff losses in the 2011, finishing their seasons at 10-2 and 11-1, respectively. Both teams’ loss columns are already equal to last year's. But there’s something fans of Powder Springs’ two public high schools are keeping in mind as they look toward the rest of the season: The three losses in four games have come from top-five teams. After a rousing win over Brookwood at the Corky Kell Classic to start the season, Walton High School has another formidable opponent Friday in McEachern. The Raiders, ranked No. 3 in Class 6A, will stay on the road to play the Indians in an East Cobb-West Cobb doubleheader that also features Lassiter vs. Hillgrove. The Hillgrove game begins at 7 p.m.; the Walton-McEachern kickoff is slated for 9:30 p.m. Both games will be play at McEachern and televised on Georgia Public Broadcasting. The Indians were handed a 31-12 defeat by last year's 5A state champions, and the Hawks shut down Fulton County's Westlake, 31-15.
McEachern High headed into Saturday's Corkey Classic with high hopes, finishing last season at a remarkable 10-2 and hungry to avenge the second-round upset against Cobb rival Lassiter. But at the season's premier kickoff event at the Georgia Dome, the Indians never had the lead against Gwinnett County's Grayson, who last season shut out Walton, 24-0, to claim the 5A state championship. Corky Kell Classic teams Walton, Kell and McEachern are ranked in pre-season polls.
The start of the high school football season is less than a week away, and some of Cobb's best teams are priming for an early spotlight. Walton, Kell and McEachern will all be playing next Saturday in the Corky Kell Classic at the Georgia Dome. Earlier this week, they all learned, not surprisingly, that they're ranked in the Top 10 in preseason polls. Earlier this year, the Georgia High School Association went from five to six classifications for sports, so the designations for most schools have changed. East Cobb's Walton, which reached the Class AAAAA title game and is ranked No. 4 in the Class AAAAAA preseason poll, got a bit of a surprise this week in a scrimmage against Hillgrove of West Cobb.
