Residents Appear Mixed on Powder Springs ZIP Code Change

Tuesday's town hall meeting about the possible switch became heated at points, with some citizens going back and forth with each other, county and city officials, and a Postal Service representative.

Residents of Powder Springs and unincorporated Cobb attending a packed town hall meeting Tuesday night seemed split on how they will vote on changing their ZIP code from Hiram’s 30141 to Powder Springs’ 30127.  The 40-plus citizens there will be part of the roughly 700 addresses in a Southwest chunk of the county that will be mailed a survey in either January or February. They will then vote simply for or against changing the ZIP code and mail it back to the U.S. Postal Service.  Those who rent their property in the affected area will not receive the survey because it will be mailed to their tenants.  If a simple majority approves, the switch will take effect July 1, 2013, with both 30127 and 30141 working for mailing for a full year. ZIP Code Dispute May Be Settled Soon

Cobb citizens with Paulding addresses could see their correct residency on letters and packages.

Cobb residents with Paulding addresses will soon be able to decide by a group vote on whether to switch their ZIP code to reflect the county they actually live in. Since April 2011, when one of the affected residents asked the Powder Springs City Council for support, the city has requested that the Postal Service change Hiram's 30141 in Cobb to Powder Springs' 30127. “They finally, last month, sent a letter saying they would accommodate the request on certain conditions," Community Development Director Pam Conner said at Wednesday's work session. Postal Service Emails May Have Viruses

The fake messages contain information about an attempted or intercepted package delivery.

Warning: If you get an email about a package delivery, be careful because it may contain a virus. The fake emails may seem like they're coming from the U.S. Postal Service, according to a news release from the company. In the emails is fraudulent information about an attempted or intercepted package delivery. Also within is a link that, when opened, installs a malicious virus that can steal personal information from your computer. Recipients are instructed to not click on the link. Simply delete the message without taking any further action, the release says. The postal service is working to resolve the issue and shut down the malicious program. Anyone with questions about a delivery or wish to report spam is asked to call 1-800-ASK-USPS.

A Paulding ZIP Code in a Cobb World

There are more than 200 developed properties, most of which are residential, that have Hiram addresses but are across the county line.

He had a Cobb ZIP code when he lived in Paulding County, and three years ago, when he actually moved to Cobb, his ZIP changed to a Paulding code. Before relocating, Johnnie Purify wasn’t aware of the possible complications presented by living in a city that has another city’s—and especially county’s—ZIP code. But since then, he said he has learned more about the issue than he ever thought he would. “We were totally unaware of the infraction it would cause on our life,” said the husband and father of three. Purify lives in the relatively new and small Woodberry Farms subdivision in Powder Springs near the Paulding County line.
