Video: Business Relocates to Historic Powder Springs Building

Kiwi Quilts was off C.H. Parkway for three years before taking over the Country Store of Seven Springs former spot on Marietta Street.

Kiwi Quilts—which offers a wide variety of fabrics, tools, literature, classes and other things on quilting—is the latest business to move into what could be considered the most recognizable building in the city limits of Powder Springs. After being open on C.H. Parkway for three years, the business replaces the Country Store of Seven Springs, which closed its doors in July after 15 years at the location on Marietta Street in the heart of the city's downtown area. The rear section of the building, once a stable, dates back to the 1830s and is believed to be the oldest standing structure in the city. The front section can be traced back to the 1860s and has been, among other things, a blacksmith shop, general store and dance studio. In 2006…

Video: Boutique for Body, Hair Opens in Downtown Powder Springs

Lysandra Taylor had operated her business, Darcy's Botanicals, from home for nearly four years before moving into the heart of the city.

All the hair and body products featured at Darcy's Botanicals—the conditioners, the perfumes, the body oils, the bath salts—are handmade by Lysandra Taylor.  The Powder Springs resident of 17 years ran the business from her home for nearly four of those years before deciding she wanted a brick-and-mortar shop. Early last month, she held the grand opening for her new location on Marietta Street downtown in the former Powder Springs Coffee and Bake Shoppe spot. The store was previewed by Patch in May. Taylor, 42, named it after her 10-year-old daughter Darcy, a student at Kemp Elementary. Powder Springs Gun Club Explains Alcohol Sales

After being granted a license to serve drinks by the City Council, the owners posted the following message on their site, GovernorsGunClub.com. Patch has published it unedited below.

Governors Gun Club has been granted permission to obtain a serving license in our members lounge. The lounge is not available to the general public or all club members. The lounge is only accessed by key cards issued to a limited group of members (Full Metal Jacket Members). All food and beverage services will be charged to the member’s account allowing tracking of their beverage purchases. Once a beverage is purchased on the customer’s account, the account is flagged and they cannot be checked into the range that day. Full Metal Jacket Members who wish to have a drink after shooting have available to them Gun Valet Service. This service allows their firearms to be stored in the facility vault until a future visits. Additionally, the …

For some reason my earlier reply did not post. I will attempt part of it again. I am far from a teetotaling prohibitionist. In fact, I WELCOMED the vote on Sunday alcohol sales. I thought it was high time that the state of Georgia got into the 21st century. I have concerns not only for the citizens and the drivers in the area, one of whom could be ME or my daughter with her little girls, but also…   more ›

Powder Springs Gun Range OK'd to Serve Alcohol

Not everyone agreed to the City Council's approval Monday, with one resident saying: "Alcohol and guns do not mix."

One of the two alcohol licenses approved by the Powder Springs City Council Monday came with little discussion and no debate. It was for wine and beers sales for the recently opened Loma Pizzeria on Sailors Parkway. The council approved the license 4-1, with Councilwoman Nancy Hudson dissenting, as she typically does on alcohol issues. But the other license, requested by the owners of the $3.5 million Governor’s Gun Club being built at the corner of C.H. James Parkway and Sterlingbrooke Drive, was full of points and rebuttals before being approved 3-2. The small selection of alcohol would be served during the hours allowed by Powder Springs law and in a lounge secured with a special key given just to members. The only people under 21 who …
