Powder Springs Mayor Honors Students for Respect

Thirty-nine from Tapp Middle were nominated by their teachers for showing the character trait of the quarter.

Thirty-nine Tapp Middle students were recently honored for showing respect as part of the school’s program that awards those who display a certain trait.  At Monday night’s City Council meeting, some of those students were recognized by Mayor Pat Vaughn, who recently attended a Chick-fil-A-sponsored breakfast with them. “Each teacher recommended a student from her class that she felt had best represented respect,” the mayor said. “I want you to know how proud I am of these students.” All the character traits play off the acronym PRIDE—Performance, Respect, Integrity, Determination, Excellence. Hence, the program is called Students of Pride.  It was put together by Tapp’s teachers and Principal Jeanne Walker over the summer, and, since …

Former Tapp Principal, Counselor Fired

Today's vote by the Cobb County Board of Education was unanimous, the Marietta Daily Journal says.

Former Tapp Middle Principal Jerry Dority and school counselor Yatta Collins were fired by a unanimous vote from the Cobb County Board of Education today, the Marietta Daily Journal reports via Twitter. The decision comes a little more than a month after the two were arrested for allegedly failing to report possible abuse against a student immediately to authorities. They had since been on paid administrative leave. State law says that a person overseeing children, like at a school, must report a case of suspected abuse immediately, but in no case later than 24 hours from the time “there is reasonable cause to believe a child has been abused.” Failure to do so results in a misdemeanor charge. Dority, 50, and Collins, 40, allegedly waited …

As a parent of a current Tapp student I have to say Dr. Dority was very open and warm to my son and I. The school isn't perfect, and when I had issues that I didn't feel assistant admin handled correctly Dr. Dority met with me and offered several solutions, put people in place to carry them out and periodically checked up. Even with her busy schedule she will take time to talk and listen. The …   more ›

Ex-Tapp Principal Is Guilty, Board Members Say

The full board has 10 days on whether to agree with the ruling from Monday's hearing for Jerry Dority, the Marietta Daily Journal says.

Three Cobb Board of Education members have found former Tapp Middle Principal Jerry Dority guilty of mishandling a case of possible child abuse, according to the Marietta Daily Journal. The MDJ says that the full board has 10 days on whether to agree with the verdict from the three members who participated in Monday's eight-hour hearing—David Banks, David Morgan and Tim Stultz. The agreement, in the form of a majority vote, would lead to her termination. Dority, 50, and a counselor at Tapp, 40-year-old Yatta Collins, were arrested earlier this month for allegedly failing to report the possible abuse immediately to authorities. Collins' hearing is scheduled to begin March 27. They are both on paid administrative leave. The two pleaded the …
