Banks are closed today. So are post offices. But schools will still be in session. Veterans Day was Sunday, and because the holiday fell on the weekend, many entities will observe the holiday today, including the federal government, which will be giving many of its employees the day off, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Today is also a holiday for the state of Georgia, one of the 12 holidays state employees will observe this year. While most other government-related offices will be closed for the day, students this morning will be heading to classes in the Cobb, Douglas, and Paulding county school systems. This week's Cobb, Douglas and Paulding Weekend Spotlight features an area Veterans Day event in Smyrna where residents can show their support for local veterans. The 5th Annual Smyrna Veterans Day Service will be held this Sunday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at Brinkley Park next to The American Legion Post 160 office at 160 Legion Drive SE in Smyrna. The event is open to the public. Residents can help support local veterans and their families by making donations at the Distribution of Poppies events by the Auxiliary of American Legion Post 160 throughout the weekend (watch the video above for details on time and location). By John Hollner American Legion Post 294 A ceremony commemorating Veterans Day will be conducted on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. by American Legion Post 294 of Powder Springs at the Powder Springs Veterans Memorial. The memorial is located in front of the Powder Springs Library at 4181 Atlanta St. In case of inclimate weather, the ceremony will be held at the Post home at 3282 Florence Road, one block north of C.H. James Parkway next to First Citizens Bank. All veterans and the public are cordially invited. As a public service, citizens are reminded that faded and worn US flags should not be flown, and they can be dropped in the red, white and blue mail box in front of our building for proper disposal. More than three decades ago, Luis and Dinorah Roldan joined the Army together in their homeland of Puerto Rico and have triumphed through the many challenges presented by military careers.
Luis and Dinorah Roldan have gone through some rough times since beginning their military careers together in 1978. Being separated from each other, sometimes for yearlong periods. The scares surrounding overseas service, both for them and now for their two sons. Undefined work hours described only as “24/7.” But the 11-year members of American Legion Post 294 in Powder Springs know many have had it much harder, making the ultimate sacrifice to maintain the freedoms of the United States. “For us, it was a sacrifice … but we know that others were even worse, many who died,” says 55-year-old Luis, who served in logistics for the Army. “We made those sacrifices to pursue and to get a better nation.
