Burning Ban in West Cobb

The open burning ban starts in May.

From May 1 to Sept. 30, Cobb residents cannot use air curtain destructors for land clearing or burn leaves, tree limbs, other yard waste and forest land. Each year, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources issues a ban on open burning. Cobb and 53 other counties in Georgia are part of the ban. Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services is responsible for the enforcement of this state-issued burning ban in unincorporated Cobb County and the cities of Acworth, Kennesaw and Powder Springs.

'Numerous' Computers Taken in Cobb Child Porn Operation

"No physical arrests have made at this time," Officer Mike Bowman with the Cobb County Police Department said this evening. "Charges may be forthcoming pending the completion of the computer analysis."

The Cobb County Police Department today seized "numerous" computers as part of a multi-agency operation that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman called the "largest of its kind in Georgia." During a three-month investigation that began in January, the GBI and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force identified 98 suspects who distributed child porn over the Internet, GBI spokesman John Bankhead said this afternoon. Those were the targets of today's operation, known as Operation Guarding Innocence. As of 6:30 p.m., there have been 73 search warrants executed and 41 arrests made in connection with the operation, Bankhead said. Apply to Be a Cobb Police Officer

Cobb County Government is accepting applications for its police officer positions.

The Cobb County Police Department is seeking candidates for its police officer positions. Currently certified officers, as well as candidates with no previous law enforcement experience, are welcome to apply. Successful candidates will patrol the county and respond to calls for service, investigate crimes and render assistance to residents as necessary. Entry level tests will be administered from April through November. Applicants must submit an application on the first Monday of every month prior to the test. Police: Coach Arrested for Child Molestation

Robert Carlysle Cartwright Jr., is a teacher and coach at Midway Covenant Christian School, a private school in Cobb County.

Robert Carlysle Cartwright Jr., 46, was arrested and charged with felony aggravated child molestation on March 27. Cartwright was arrested at Midway Covenant Christian School, located at 4635 Dallas Highway Powder Springs, where he is a teacher and coach. Midway Covenant Christian School is a private Christian school in Cobb County. Detectives with the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office Crimes Against Children Division began an investigation into Cartwright after a juvenile victim came forward alleging sexual misconduct. The incident that Cartwright is being charged with occurred at Cartwright’s residence at 1169 Cohran Store Rd., in Douglasville, on Nov. 9, 2012. The department's social media account began last week.

The Cobb Police Department has begun a Twitter account. The real-time social media account began on Wednesday, Jan. 23. As of early Tuesday, the department's latest tweet was made Thursday—an update on an crash on Interstate 285. Users can also sign up by texting "Follow CobbPolice1" to 40404. Cobb PD created a Facebook page last year.

Marietta Woman Dies After Cobb Crash

Luca Kosic of Marietta was killed in a two-car collision on Smyrna Powder Springs Road late Christmas Eve.

A Marietta woman died late Christmas Eve in a two-car collision on Smyrna Powder Springs Road, and Cobb Police say poor weather conditions, including dense fog, were a contributing factor. Luca Kosic, 46, of Marietta, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at the intersection of Smryna Powder Springs Road and Trellis Oaks Drive, according to Cobb Police spokesman Michael Bowman.  He said Kosic was a passenger in a gold 1999 Toyota Camry traveling southbound on Smyrna Powder Springs Road shortly after 10:30 p.m. Monday when it was struck by a maroon 1994 Toyota Camry heading northbound.
