The Powder Springs Police Department held its first gun safety seminar last month. Officials are discussing offering the program again later this year.
Residents who could not make it to the Feb. 21 gun safety seminar put on by the Powder Springs Police Department may have a chance to attend one later this year. The free class, held at Tapp Middle School, was the first to be offered by the department. According to Maj. Matt Boyd, spokesman for the department, the event drew an estimated 65 to 70 attendees—a turnout officials deemed a success. Topics discussed during the seminar included gun safety rules, Georgia weapons carrying laws, gun storage options and non-lethal means of self-defense. “Our hope [with the seminar] is not only to increase awareness regarding gun safety, but to bridge the relationship between citizens and the police,” Boyd said. Boyd added that the department intends …

Powder Springs Mayor Pat Vaughn last month gave her annual “State of the City” address, which covered several highlights of the past year as well as project completions and events expected to occur later this year.
2013 is already shaping up to be a bright year for Powder Springs. That was the message Mayor Pat Vaughn gave during her “State of the City” address on Feb. 12. Vaughn began her address by focusing on the city’s economic status. She said that even though this year is in its infancy, at least one economic factor has shown growth over the previous year. “The city continues to recover and we are encouraged by recent signs of economic activity,” Vaughn said. “Our building permits, residential development, is under way on New Macland at the Vineyards development. This year, we have had 24 new housing starts, whereas last year, we only had zero. “So that is a very, very good sign, and we are quite pleased with that.” Twenty-one new businesses …

Hundreds of Powder Springs residents later this year would see their city council districts changed should state and federal officials sign off on a ward redistricting plan approved last week by city officials.
Powder Springs residents will head to the polls this November to select three city councilmen, but for some residents, the potential choices on those ballots are likely to change. The Powder Springs City Council at its Feb. 18 meeting gave its approval to a redistricting plan for the city’s three council wards. During the Feb. 12 State of the City event, City Manager Brad Hulsey explained that the redistricting is required to occur after each Census. The latest Census occurred in 2010. While this will be the second municipal election since that Census, it is the first to be impacted by it, as the 2011 elections featured the mayoral and two at-large council posts—all citywide races. “As the Census Bureau finished the census, we realized …
