Chief Charlie Sewell emphasized the group wouldn't have law enforcement powers but would be a “non-enforcement arm of the police department.”
As the first Citizen Police Academy under Chief Charlie Sewell winds down, the Powder Springs Police Department is in the early planning stages of another way to get residents involved. The national Volunteers in Police Service program comes under the USA Freedom Corps, which was started by President George W. Bush to “build on the countless acts of service, sacrifice and generosity that followed September 11,” the organization’s website says. Sewell envisions Powder Springs’ volunteers as people who will patrol the city’s streets and nature trails, and notify police if they see anything suspicious. “The major thing we’re looking for is someone to be the eyes and ears and report when they see something or hear something,” Sewell said, …

The youth leaders said they wanted to express gratitude for all the support they have received from law enforcement. Local law enforcement support of the Cobb Alcohol Taskforce's efforts has been, and continues to be, vital in keeping the public safe and protecting youth from the dangers of underage and youth binge drinking, the organization says in a news release. The Cobb Alcohol Taskforce's Youth Council is a youth-led movement made up of middle and high schoolers with the goal of …

City officials honored Sgt. Lewis Wilkie at Monday's City Council meeting for calming a possible jumper from the Silver Comet Trail bridge during the summer.
Officials took time at the end of Monday's City Council meeting to recognize Powder Springs police Sgt. Lewis Wilkie for his role in saving a suicidal person during the summer. Wilkie, who wasn't present Monday, was the first person on the scene—followed by two Cobb police officers—of someone preparing to jump from a Silver Comet Trail bridge, Maj. John Robison said. “He was able to talk the gentleman down emotionally, and as he built a comfort level with him, the Cobb County officers were able to come around and pull him away from danger," Robison said, adding that the person received psychological help afterward. “Sgt. Wilkie and those officers helped save a life that night," Robison said. “We are very proud of him," Mayor Pat Vaughn …

A high number of accidents at certain intersections has officials considering the technology, which would pop violators with a $70 ticket per violation.
Those zipping through intersections to beat red lights in Powder Springs could be paying a price for their lead feet. A high number of accidents at intersections along the city’s biggest thoroughfares—C.H. James Parkway and Sailors Parkway—has officials considering traffic light cameras, which would pop red-light runners with a $70 ticket per violation. “One of the patrol officers recognized that when we have a traffic accident on C.H. James and any of the cross streets, they’re usually large,” Police Chief Charlie Sewell told the City Council at Wednesday’s work session. “There are usually injuries and … they are much worse than most other places.” Sewell mentioned several metro Atlanta counties and cities that use the technology, the …

The "small" blaze in a home on Country Walk Drive was under control in about 10 minutes.
Firefighters "did a good job" of stopping a "small fire" in a Powder Springs house in about 10 minutes this afternoon, Cobb fire Capt. Ty Mitchell said. A postal worker driving by saw smoke coming from the house at 3280 Country Walk Drive in the Country Walk subdivision about 1:50 p.m., Mitchell said. The first fire engine worked to extinguish the fire, while the second to arrive confirmed that no one was inside. In total, three fire engines, a rescue vehicle, and a ladder truck responded, Mitchell said. The house wasn't severely damaged, he said, but the family will be staying elsewhere temporarily. The cause is under investigation. For a short time, the fire closed the part of Country Walk Drive from Old Lost Mountain Road to Barnwood …

This kind of thing is highly dubious in my opinion, after all George Bush gave us the Patriot act(sic) and T.S.A.( we all know what they've done to the flying public), so tying this to policies he supported doesn't win support with me. While a citizen police auxiliary has ties to the Civil Defense programs during the early cold war years under present political climate it takes on a whole new …   more ›
